Qualification: CPCCLDG3001 – Licence to Perform Dogging
Assessment Type: Theory and Practical
Prerequisite: There are no prerequisites for this course
Course Description:
People who must use their judgment to handle loads or guide crane movements from a position outside the crane operator’s complete field of vision (via methods like whistle signals or radio) engage in dogging.
Dogging involves two primary components:
1. Employing slinging techniques for relocating a load, encompassing the choice and examination of lifting equipment.
2. Guiding a hoist or crane operator in charge of moving a load when the load is beyond the operator’s line of sight.
In simpler terms, an individual involved in dogging is referred to as a Dogger.
Course Description
This training program encompasses all the necessary elements to acquire a national High Risk Work Licence (Class DG) for Dogging operations. If your aim is to advance to Basic Rigging, Intermediate Rigging, or Advanced Rigging, this Dogging course marks the initial step among the four tiers leading to your objective.
Upon obtaining this license, you will have the authority to oversee load movements for cranes and engage in the selection and inspection of lifting equipment like chains, synthetic slings, shackles, and lifting beams. Successful completion of this course grants you the capability to direct crane load movements and inspect lifting equipment within Australia.
It’s important to note that this course does not address the prerequisites for performing rigging tasks. To engage in rigging work, a High Risk Work Licence (Class RB, RI, or RA) is mandatory.
Course Outcomes
. Compliance with Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) Legislation, encompassing Acts, Regulations, and the Duty of Care.
. Application of Australian Standards and National Standards.
. Proficiency in selecting lifting equipment.
. Competence in inspecting lifting equipment before usage.
. Decision-making skills in choosing slinging methods.
. Ability to direct crane operators, especially in situations where loads are beyond their view.
. Requirements for HRW Licence
Frequently Asked Question
In some situations, a person without a high-risk work dogging license can safely sling a load, but only when no judgment is required regarding the technique or the suitability of the lifting gear. To ensure proper qualification for such tasks, certain factors must be predetermined by a licensed dogger:
- The load must remain visible to the operator throughout the lifting process.
- The person must be trained and documented in the specific lifting procedure.
- A standard lifting procedure must be established and signed by the dogger, engineer, and rigger.
- An inspector must verify that the lifting equipment is in safe and serviceable condition.
Rigging is the process carried out by a rigger, who sets up pulleys and hoists to shift loads. This process involves various mechanical tasks such as transporting, positioning, and securing loads. A rigger is primarily responsible for ensuring the safe movement of equipment on the job site.
To be a skilled rigger, you must be qualified and knowledgeable about selecting the right tools, erecting different structures, and safely dismantling them.
Dogging, on the other hand, involves specific tasks on a worksite. A dogger is trained in the correct slinging techniques to safely sling loads.
It's important to note that rigging and dogging require separate licenses. Dogging focuses on certain tasks with cranes and lifting equipment, while rigging covers a broader range of activities, including safely erecting steel structures and placing precast concrete members.
In Australia, obtaining a dogging license is the first step before pursuing a basic rigging license.
A dogman is responsible for checking the loads to ensure they are within the crane's lifting capacity. They also ensure that the loads are properly secured using lifting devices and use taglines to guide the hoisting process.
This role requires a high-risk work license, as it involves applying slinging techniques, which include selecting and inspecting lifting gear. Additionally, a dogman directs the crane operator when moving loads that are out of the operator's line of sight.
The slinging technique demands careful judgment to determine the suitability of the lifting gear. This includes considering the load's center of gravity, size, shape, and weight.
